Jean-Georges Cornélius (1880-1963), a student of Gustave Moreau and later Luc-Olivier Merson, produced paintings that were both mystical and allegorical. He was deeply influenced by his conversion to Catholicism in 1931. He also illustrated the poems of Baudelaire and Oscar Wilde. From 1940 onwards, he lived in seclusion in Ploubaszlanec, Brittany.
