Louise Hervieu (1878-1954) was a French painter, illustrator, and writer. Born with syphilis and of very fragile health, Louise Hervieu revealed a gift for drawing from childhood. Discouraged after the failure of her only painting exhibition in 1910, she abandoned painting in favor of drawing. She illustrated Baudelaire's *Les Fleurs du Mal* and *Le Spleen de Paris* and published collections of drawings and novels interspersed with her illustrations. It is also to Louise Hervieu that we owe the hard-won provision in 1938 of a "health record" by the government for every newborn, in which the parents' medical history, then all the child's medical care and illnesses, and finally the child's illnesses until their death, would be recorded, in turn serving to maintain the health of their children and grandchildren.
